In today's multi-disciplinary world, lawyers need the ability to emphasize with, understand, and think like their clients and co-workers. They will often need to collaborate directly with the business team, and understand the strategy concerns that drive decision-making processes. In order to provide the best guidance and advice, you may need to tap into the mindset of a project manager, a financial officer, or a business owner. But which of these skills should you cultivate and how are they best utilized to help you become a valuable and trusted collaborator with the business unit or ownership team?

This session, led by Ciaran McGovern and Andrew Walker of Axiom, will help you arm yourself with a toolbox of innovative thought processes and skills that will give you an edge when working in-house or with organizations. They will identify the attributes that the best lawyers incorporate into their practice, and provide you with the tools needed to tap into them for yourself. Moreover, they will provide you with a roadmap for successfully collaborating with and becoming an integral advisor to the business team.

Ciaran McGovern

Ciaran is a Manager with Axiom, a professional services firm and the world's largest provider of tech-enabled legal, contracts, and compliance solutions for large enterprises. Previously, Ciaran worked as a Senior Consultant at Wavestone (Formerly Everest Group).

Ciaran has led a number of engagements in his career, including developing a new rate card solution and executing negotiations of a $750M+ ACV BPO contract for a technology company across multiple functional areas to establish better contract structure and cost reductions. He has also defined pricing models and pricing level strategies for a call center, capturing $70M+ in savings by modernizing and renegotiating supplier agreements for a technology company

Ciaran obtained his MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University, and holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Calgary.

Andrew Walker

Andrew is a Senior Manager at Axiom, focusing on legal services, business development, and client relationship management. He has also previously held a role as Solutions Consultant at Thomson Reuters, working in Legal Tech and Information Services, Business Development, and Customer Success.

Prior to those experiences, Andrew worked as a Lawyer at Taylor Klein Oballa LLP (Corporate, M&A, IP & Tech, Entertainment), Target (Secondment from McMillan LLP), and McMillan (Corporate, M&A, Commercial).

Andrew holds a J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto.
